Course Overview
This course provides an overview of evidence-based, theologically-sound counseling strategies for working with those with behavioral and emotional distress.
Special attention will be given to behavioral and chemical addictions as well.

Assignment Overview
Students report spending 6-8 hours on homework as a weekly average.
Three papers, one on each of the three main textbooks.
The purpose of these papers is to demonstrate understanding of the reading and ability to assimilate what you’ve learned and to reinforce the knowledge, values, and skills gained from the reading.
Pre- and post-course reflection papers. These will give you a chance to measure your own growth as a result of this class.
Regularly assigned textbook and article readings.
Weekly discussion forums on a prompt from the professor.
Intended Outcomes
You will understand

- A pastor’s role in caring for the mental and relational needs within the church.
- The etiology and treatment of various forms of behavioral and emotional disorders.

- Explain the symptomology and treatment options for key behavioral and emotional disorders.
- Successfully defend a plan for developing and implementing a successful counseling ministry within the local church.
- Conceptualize counseling cases in a theologically-sensitive framework.
You will appreciate
- The impact of relationships on the development of psychopathology as well as the importance of monitoring relationships throughout the treatment process.
- The value of being able to navigate the contemporary categorization system as a means of provide competent care.
- The role of the church in providing support and accountability to those in distress and their families.
