Course Overview

The Eschatology course is a systematic study of the doctrine of last things, using biblical and historical resources.

Topics include death, the intermediate state, resurrection, the second coming of Jesus, the millennium, the last judgment, heaven, and hell.

The goal of this course is to provide an orientation toward the future that is focused on the hope we have in Christ, while encouraging faithful living in the present.

Intended Outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to 

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the history, nature, and methods for the study of eschatology.
  2. Understand the major topics of biblical eschatology, including the various interpretations of the biblical data and their implications.

    The fulfillment of these knowledge outcomes is assessed through weekly assignments and the eschatology topic paper.

    As a result of taking this course, you should

    1. Appreciate the importance of continuing to grow and develop in a personal relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit by grasping the hope that we have through the biblical revelation.
    2. Be motivated by the responsibility we have to accurately handle God’s Word and interpret it to the best of our abilities.

    The fulfillment of these values & affective outcomes is assessed through the course reflection paper.

    At the end of this course you should

    1. Be able to articulate the various interpretations of the biblical data related to eschatology and choose the ones that you think best explain and systematize what you see in Scripture.
    2. Be able to apply insights from biblical eschatology to your life and ministry.

    The fulfillment of these skills outcomes is assessed through the weekly assignments and the course reflection paper.

    Course Procedures

    Video lectures (both pre-recorded and synchronous real-time interaction via Zoom) and auxiliary materials will supplement the class textbooks to ensure that you are adequately exposed to the necessary information.

    Weekly homework assignments guide students through the various course materials, and provide a space to grow in their understanding and appropriation of the components related to Eschatology.

    Readings are assigned to expose students to the course content, and they will have the opportunity to interact with the readings.

    The professor may sometimes use a question and answer format (Socratic method) in addition to lectures. Discussion is encouraged.
